Andrew Sam has served as the Medical Coordinator for Governor’s School East (GSE) since 2016. Over that time, Andrew has provided unparalleled medical leadership for GSE and the overall Governor’s School (GS) program.

A native North Carolinian who served as a Critical Care RN in the Medicine Intensive Care Unit at UNC Hospitals for over 30 years, Andrew is a constant presence on the GSE campus, where he is always available to help students with medical issues large and small. His calm demeanor and willingness to help at all times have constantly made GSE a better, and healthier place, and the number of students who have received direct aid from Andrew is nearly uncountable.

Andrew is also a valued member of the broader GS community. During the COVID summers of 2021 and 2022, his wisdom and guidance proved invaluable in helping the entire GS program, not just GSE, navigate uncharted waters. His medical leadership and dedication to GS and its students are exemplary in every way, including always being willing to help with many behind-the-scenes tasks that fall well outside his medical duties.

For those and many other reasons, the NC Governor’s School Foundation is proud to honor Andrew Sam as a Jim Hart Governor’s School Champion Award winner for 2022.
